  Welcome

Miss Georgia Caribbean 2006 Kemish Powell
Born on May 5th, 1982 at the St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kingston in the nations capital on the beautiful island of Jamaica, to Ripton and Grace Powell; I was named Kemisha Leonise Powell. Both parents are educators at the primary level and prior to my birth there were two older siblings, two girls Nichole and Tamiko, respectively making me the third.

As a child, it was my mothers desire to grow her girls up in the church, more so in the Christian faith. My first encounter with schooling out of the home was Edgewater Basic School, then Bridgeport Infant. By the age of 5, I was enrolled at Dunrobin Primary School was my most fundamental learning skills were structured and enhanced. At school my focus lied on being involved in numerous activities, the school choir, dance, and drama clubs. These subsequently became passions of mine from an early age; I began playing the piano and having fun with and acting like the boys.

Approximately at nine years of age I attended the Bridgeport Primary School for my final year of primary level education; here my mother had major roles as my teacher, guidance counselor, disciplinarian and friend. At home was the only time she was mom again. As I prepared for high school, I was involved in National Debating, School Challenge of KFC Quizzes, Science and Mathematics competitions all of which gave me the zeal I needed to achieve, through discipline and hard work; and the sweet task of success. Later on that year, I completed the common entrance examination and moved on to Campion College.

At Campion in the morning or at anytime class was not in session. I could often e seen on the tennis court or playing scrimmage with boys or “money” football by the benches under the trees. I was member of The Campion College Choir, Key club, Environmental and Life Savers Clubs. I attended St. Andrew Technical High School as a steppingstone to my career in Business. I did all business courses there with the intension of continuing to the University of Technology, Jamaica. At school I was very involved and began the production of the school year book, upon graduating I achieved awards for academic performance as well as all the business courses I had intended on pursuing.

Besides my school environment, I was involved in The Elim Open Bible Church Choir and Dance Group as well as the Visonette, dedicated to the inspiration and development of young girls. On Saturdays and major holidays I taught classes assisting my mother in preparing children for the Common Entrance Examination.

For the period of the entire summer of my final year in High School, I worked at The Jamaica Lottery Company, in the marketing department. The following summer I worked at Y.O.U (Youth Opportunities Unlimited) which is a non-profit organization committed to guide, mentor and assist children; especially those of the inner city for their betterment. This introduced me to the field of service, which I have grown to love and enjoy. As I matured, I moved on to work at the University Of Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, School of Engineering; Student Affairs office. Here management and students are always at odds. Being a student there myself, even though it was another faculty, made the job not in the least a bit easier.

It would seem, that very September I began attending the University of technology intending to pursue my Bachelors in Business and Education, at the Faculty of Liberal Studies and Technical Education. My Intention for doing so was to follow in my parent’s footsteps in Teaching education while pursuing my dreams of doing business. After, a year of studies I realized that teaching was not my niche and so the following I attended University College of the Caribbean; where I obtained a scholarship I completed an Associate Degree in Business Administration. After graduation, I began my Bachelors in International Relations, which was short lived by my interest in traveling and learning new skills, while meeting new people each day ensuring passenger safety while performing an award winning service. I became a flight attendant for our National Carrier, Air Jamaica. During my service at the Airline, I was exposed to many cultures, people, and ways of life. I flew for the airline until; my hopes came to an abrupt halt. Our national carrier was experiencing financial difficulties and being at the bottom of the food chain, naturally my batch was one of the first to be sent home. At the same time I discovered ways of improving myself, as a developing young woman. I had many experiences with ill passengers and many of my older flight attendant co-workers were nurses or were pursuing a career in this area. This was also the place I made my ultimate career choice and reason for pursuing Nursing.

Presently, I am a full-time student at Southern Union State Community College in Opelika Alabama where I have begun my Associate Degree in Registered Nursing. In the near future it is my desire to continue this route to be a Nurse Anesthetist and one day finally owning a health care facility along with my other siblings.
